Cheshire Boys' LAX Ends Regular Season Victorious, Track And Field Athletes Excel At Hand

On Thursday, Cheshire High School boys' lacrosse (13-3) finished the regular season with their third straight win, 20-3, at Shelton (9-7). The Rams built a 17-2 lead at halftime.

Senior tri-captain Matt Jeffery and senior Adam Vernon both tallied four goals and two assists. Senior tri-captain Ryan Grove contributed a goal and three assists (personal high), along with winning 19 of 20 face-offs.

Juniors Brady Potyrala and Nick Miller both recorded hat tricks. Potyrala also had an assist and controlled 2 of 3 face-offs.

Senior Drew DePodesta put in two goals. Sophomore Jacob Rivera picked up his first goal and point.

Junior Tommy Wilkinson and sophomore JC Sutherland added goals. Junior Cooper Deko secured his first assist and point and classmate Luke Mongillo won two of four face-offs.

In net, junior Joe Grenier made five saves and freshman Eric Gorman picked up two off the bench.

CHS has clinched the second seed in the Southern Connecticut Conference Tournament. After a first-round bye, the Rams host the winner of Notre Dame-West Haven (third seed) and Sheehan (sixth seed) in the semifinals on May 21 at 6:30 p.m.

Last spring, the Rams beat Fairfield Prep, 8-7, to win their first tournament title since 2010.

Boys’ Outdoor Track and Field

Cheshire competed in the SCC Boys’ Novice Championship at Daniel Hand in Madison. Sophomore Gabriel Njeim swept the 110- (20.54) and 300-meter (47.72) hurdles, while freshman Miquel Monreal won the 1,600-meters (5:09.33) and took runner-up in the 800-meters (2:17.29).

Sophomore Zachary Chasen crossed the line first in the 3,200-meters (11:02.39). Freshman Raine Ma (1,600-meters, 5:19.00) and junior Valentin Jimenez (pole vault, eight feet, six inches) also came in second.

Junior Connor Michaud finished third in the triple jump (33’5”). Freshman Luke Teator placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (22.24) and sixth in the 300-meter hurdles (57.34).

Friday’s varsity schedule:

Boys’ Volleyball (15-3)

Winners of seven straight matches, the Rams host Daniel Hand (0-17) in the final regular-season home match at 6 p.m. Before starting the match, tri-captains Will Allen and Connor Hayes, as well as Keegan Grace and Miles Spataj, will be honored on Senior Day.

On May 3, CHS won 3-0 at Hand.
