Cheshire Boys' Lacrosse Extends Win Streak On Saturday, Athletes Shine In Track and Field

On Saturday, Cheshire High School boys’ lacrosse extended their win streak to four games, posting a 17-9 victory over Archbishop Stepinac (New York). The Rams outscored the Crusaders, 7-2, in the second quarter to build a 11-5 advantage at halftime.

Senior tri-captain Matt Jeffery netted seven goals in the win. Senior Adam Vernon posted four goals and three assists, while junior Sean Grevelding contributed three goals and three assists.

Junior Brady Potyrala scored twice and classmate Nick Miller put in a goal.

Freshman Grant Paul chipped in an assist.

Senior tri-captain Ryan Grove controlled 24 of 27 face-offs to establish possessions. In net, junior Joe Grenier made 14 saves.

Next Thursday, CHS heads to Middletown to compete against Xavier (4-2) at 6 p.m.

This Monday, the Rams look to bounce back in visiting West Haven

Outdoor Track and Field (Boys, 1-1; Girls, 0-1-1)

Cheshire athletes participated in the YMCA Invitational at Coginchaug.

For girls, seniors Alexa Ciccone (1,600-meters, 5:23.55), Mia Vientos (800-meters, 2:27.55), and Nicole Emede (shot put, 33 feet, two inches) claimed victories. Emede placed fifth in discus (61’6”).

Senior Katie Hall finished third in pole vault (6’6”) and fifth in javelin (60’6”).

Junior Aubrielle Richard took fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (23.36) and triple jump (26’5”). Freshman Sage Falcon nabbed fourth in the 3,200-meters (13:45.62).

Sophomores Ava Ciccone (5:53.57) and Emily D’Souza (5:54.22) came in fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 1,600-meters.

Freshmen Ava Hartunian (13.97) and Shannon Gordon (13.97) and senior Ella VanValkenburg (15.53) earned sixth through eighth in the 100-meters. Junior Antonnise Codner secured seventh in shot put (22’4”) and eighth in discus (59’0”).

On the boys’ side, senior James Ferraro (400-meters, 53.94) and junior Daniel Irish (1,600-meters, 4:40.22) were first-place finishers. Freshman Auritro Dasgupta posted second in the 200-meters (23.10) and third in the 100-meters (11.56).

Sophomore Zachary Chasen clocked 11:28.73 to take runner-up in the 3,200-meters.

Seniors Jack Lengyel (third, 4:47.32) and Daniel D’Souza (fourth, 4:55.66) placed consecutively in the 1,600-meters. Freshman Matt Gajecki contributed third in the 800-meters (2:14.96) and seventh in high jump (4’10”).

Junior Tristan Grove supplied sixth in triple jump (34’9.50”) and seventh in long jump (16’0.50”). Juniors Anthony Mariani (800-meters, sixth, 2:24.04) and Malakhi Beyah (pole vault, sixth, 8’6”), freshman Josh Lengyel (discus, seventh, 104’8”), and sophomore Charlie Williams (shot put, eighth, 31’7”) also made the top-eight in the meet.

Gordon, Hartunian, Beyah, and junior Valentin Jimenez combined to finish third in the mixed 4x100-meter relay (51.50). For the 4x400-meter race, Vientos, Ciccone, Irish, and Ferraro came in fourth (4:06.01).

Next Thursday, CHS boys and girls compete against Wilbur Cross (host) and East Haven at 4 p.m.
